Driving from Limon to Ojochal, where to stay along the way, etc
You have some options on where to stay. Keep in mind that the drive time from San Jose to us is about 3.5 hours but figure you’ll take 4 since you’ll want to stop along the way, take pictures of the monkeys you see, etc. One point of caution, don’t leave luggage, etc in your car unattended. We go from hotel to hotel and deposit our luggage, then go explore. Unfortuantley since tourism is the number one source of income for the country, thieves sometimes watch parking lots at tourist desitinations and smash and grab is known to happen. Also be aware that Costa Rica has a seat belt law that is pretty well enforced and they set up radar speed traps on the highway so you are better off not speeding. There are always a few traps by the Tarcoles River between Orotina and Jaco.
You will need to arrive at our guest house by 11:45 or so on the morning of the start of your tour. Therefore you don’t want to be too far away on that morning. The best stopping point along the way is Manuel Antonio, part of Quepos and about 75 minutes from the guest house. It’s a tourist town and a bit pricey but is also the most popular destination in the entire country. You can wing not having a hotel booked since there are many but you may not get your first choice. We like the Falls Hotel, the Costa Verde Hotel and Villas Nicolas but there are many to choose from. Jaco is another option but still pretty far from us and the town has a reputation for drugs and prostitution and more crime than most other places. It is the closest beach town to San Jose and gets a lot of traffic. Jaco is about 2.5 hours from us. Between Quepos and Dominical you won’t find much of anything in terms of a place to stay. The stretch is only about 20 miles. Dominical is a good spot as well but will be quite a drive from Limon. Limon is an industrial area and shipping port and one of the highest crime areas in CR. Be extra careful there. The CR government is trying to get tourism embedded in Limon and pumping in development dollars but as of today it is still a bit sketchy.
I can send anyone that wants them, driving directions that put you on the new Caldera toll road starting in San Jose. My directions are kind of from the airport yet the toll road really starts up by La Sabana Park in west side of San Jose by Escazu and if coming from Limon, that would be the place to get on it. There is a “ring road” called the circulavacion that goes around San Jose instead of right through the middle. It’s a bit tricky to follow since you will keep seeing signs that say “San Jose” and your natural instinct will be to go that way, which puts you off the ring road and dumps you in the city. Coming from Cartago keep following the highway east until you come to where it basically ends at a T stop. The traffic has to go either left or right, go right and about 3 blocks up the hill you will see all the traffic turn left (wait for the top of the hill) and you’ll want to turn left here as well. Now you’ll be driving for about a mile or two through a congested area before coming to a rotary. At each rotary you basically want to take the exit after the one that says “San Jose” which will keep you on the ring road. If I remember correctly, the one you want is usually a “San” something like San Fransciso. You don’t want the one for San Pedro however, that one takes you into the eastern part of the city. If you get stuck, flag down a cab, tell him you want to get to Escazu and the new Caldera Highway and follow him. It is confusing to the uninitiated. You might want to rent a GPS from Vamos, I have never used one there but I know others who have and said it was worth it. Fortunatley I know my way aroud but it has taken a fair amount of missed routes. That is why I suggest you need to get at least as far as Jaco on the day before the guest house. From Jaco the ride is easy, there is basiclaly onlyl one road and the only decision point you will come to is when you reach Quepos, where you want to take the brand new highway (to the left) which bypasses Quepos, follow the signs for Dominical. Figure it will take you longer to get everywhere than you think…..
Kristina suggested you book into the Doubletree on the night before you depart. The hotel is only about 8 miles from the airport. Another good choice is the Ramada Plaza Herradura (I prefer the Ramada) and both are located right off the highway in an area called Cariari that you have to watch for. The turn is right after you go under a bridge on the highway between the airport and downtown San Jose and you should watch for it just when you see the big yellow EPA home center on your right (like a home depot). You can also find the Adventrue Inn in cuidad Cariari right by the entrance to Los Arcos, which is a great bargain for the money. If you call Vamos beforehand and let them know, they will pick the car up from the hotel. You need to give them notice and arrange a time. They may be late so if they are not there right on time, call them again since their office is not far away. Tell them you are waiting. Their office is very close to the airpot if you want to turn it in on the day of your flight. Again check with them beforehand to be sure they have someone available to taek you to the airprot. They are quite accomodating. I prefer the Ramada and suggest you book it on Travelocity before hand. It is usually $85 plus tax but every once and a while it shows on both Travelocity and Expedia at $600. I think it is when they are sold out and they want to look like they are very expensive.
